Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure that can help with weight loss. This procedure is very common and surgeons have successfully used this for helping patients reduce weight drastically. The success rate of gastric bypass is very high and this has come as a boon for all those who have problems dealing with the excess weight. Being overweight can hamper a person in leading a normal life. Well who would like to be hampered from doing their daily work smoothly? Maintaining a healthy lifestyle has become all the more important in recent times then it was ever before. Losing weight can help in gaining that self confidence which was lost as they were acutely conscious of being overweight.

One can get back their self-confidence and become successful in their personal and professional lives by undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Are you one of those individuals who are looking to lose their excess weight? Well the first thing that you must keep in mind regarding weight loss is that it can become a tough job for you if you do not make use of the proper methods. One will come across many products and services that claim to solve the problem of excess weight once and for all very quickly. One must not be taken in by the promises that are made by these weight loss procedures, but rather verify the claims made before the procedure or service is used for losing the excess weight. After all weight reduction is something which any person who is obese or overweight would like to undergo successfully.

You must remember that not all people are perfect candidates for undergoing gastric bypass surgery and you must consult with your doctor to find out if you qualify for this surgery or not. The person?s body weight must be at least a hundred pounds above the normal body weight. Anyone who is overweight and is suffering from life threatening obesity related medical conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes and hypertension are also ideal candidates for undergoing gastric bypass surgery for weight reduction. The age of the person must be above eighteen years and under sixty five years. The person must have been obese for about five years and must not be suffering from alcohol abuse. This surgical procedure can also be used on people who did not get favorable results after undergoing other weight reduction programs and procedures.

Surgery is increasingly becoming common for people who are severely obese. Infact medical studies conducted in this direction show that the number of people who have successfully undergone this surgery for weight loss is quite high. The surgery aims to make the stomach smaller and allows the food to bypass certain parts of the small intestine. After this procedure is done the stomach of the obese person will fill in more quickly then it used to before this surgery. This reduces the amount of food which is taken and also reduces the amount of calories that are consumed by the person. This is a very effective weight loss mechanism.

Gastric bypass surgery is expensive, so most patients considering this procedure will look to their health insurance policy to cover at least part of the cost. Some insurance policies will not cover any obesity-related treatments, but those that will pay for weight loss surgery almost always require preauthorization.

This means that your insurance company will probably ask for medical records, a treatment plan, and perhaps a letter from your primary doctor and surgeon to show that you meet their criteria for benefits. Your doctor may be required to show that you have attempted weight loss in the past through other, less dangerous methods, and have failed.

If you have not already read your insurance company?s medical policy on gastric bypass surgery, you should do so before you ask your doctor to request pre-authorization. Your doctor?s staff may already have a copy of the medical policy, but if they don?t, it is always helpful if you provide this to them. If it isn’t available on your insurance company?s website, they should be mail you a copy if you ask for it.

Your doctor and surgeon may have a financial stake in helping you get insurance benefits, but the responsibility for finding the funds for your surgery is primarily on your shoulders. You should do everything you can to make the process easier for your doctor?s staff.

The specific medical policy concerning weight loss surgery is a separate document from your benefit policy - it is a document that lays down the rules for coverage for this specific procedure. Your insurance company has a medical policy for most major medical treatments and diagnoses, and the medical policy often includes the company?s criteria for “medical necessity.”

One thing that often confuses patients is the clause found in many health insurance contracts defining the term “medically necessary.” People naturally assume that if their doctor says a procedure is needed, the insurance company will accept this as true. However, their definition of “medically necessary” may be different from your doctor’s.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the procedure isn’t needed for your health and well-being - it simply means that your health insurance company doesn’t have to pay for the surgery.

That’s why you want to read the insurance company’s contract and medical policy carefully before making any financial decisions about your treatment.

If your insurance company requires preauthorization and you go ahead with treatment without going through the preauthorization process, the surgical costs will probably not be covered. This could be a very expensive mistake, and it can easily be avoided.

When the insurance carrier receives the pre-authorization request, their medical staff will go over the material provided by your doctor and decide if the criteria listed in their medical policy have been met.

Your doctor’s opinion about your need for gastric bypass surgery will need to be backed up by real facts and chart notes. A letter from your doctor that basically states ?because I said so? is not going to impress your insurance company, although a surprising number of doctors send one in, anyway.

If you do not meet the insurance company?s criteria for benefits, you may want to carefully reconsider your decision to have the surgery. The surgery is not without risks, and should not be undertaken without very strong facts showing that it?s needed. If it is needed, your doctor should be able to say why in a way that is acceptable to other medically-trained professionals.

If your request for preauthorization is turned down, you may be able to appeal the decision if:

- Your policy covers bariatric surgery,

- You qualify under the medical policy?s guidelines, and

-Your doctor has provided all the documentation that was requested,

The appeal process, if any, will be carefully outlined in your benefit handbook, and you must pay special attention to the amount of time you’re given to appeal, and what forms you may need to get the process started.

Remember that even if you have a right to appeal, you will need additional evidence not previously provided to the insurance carrier, unless the previous decision was clearly made in error. And there is no guarantee that the previous decision will be overturned.

Insurance law varies in every state, and every insurance contract is different. Be sure to seek legal advice from someone familiar with your state’s insurance laws if you are not sure about your benefits and rights under your policy. A clear understanding of your benefit contract will give you the best chance of receiving all the benefits that your health insurance premiums are paying for.

Among the first questions that most people ask when they are faced with deciding whether or not to have weight loss surgery is “is gastric bypass surgery expensive?” While this is a commonly asked question, regretably, it is not an easy question to answer.

Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure, requiring the services of many people including a surgeon, an anesthetist, a psychologist and various other specialists, as well as hospitalization for usually 2 to 3 days followed by a 2 to 6 week period of recovery. Gastric bypass surgery also comes in many different forms today and although the long-established Roux-en-Y procedure is still widely practiced, many other forms of surgery, especially laparoscopic stomach surgery, are growing in popularity.

In addition, Rather like many other kinds of surgery, gastric bypass surgery is not risk free and, whilst many people will cruise through the surgery, some will develop complications in hospital or while recovering which might increase the total cost of the operation considerably.

Against this background it can be seen that the cost is going to be high and is going to vary widely, but just how high is it and what kind of variation can be expected?

At lower end of the scale, minor surgery, such as gastric banding, without complications can be expected to cost approximately $20,000. This cost will rise to possibly as much as $35,000 for a complete gastric bypass procedure. Should complications are seen it is not at all easy to predict just what the further cost might be but it would not be unreasonable to think in terms of a total figure of $50,000.

Though gastric bypass surgery is not cheap, the good news is that, in most cases, a substantial part of this cost can be met by insurance. This will of course depend upon the kind of policy you hold and the terms and conditions of the policy and will sometimes involve something of an uphill battle with your insurance provider but, nevertheless, this is without doubt the first avenue that you should explore.

While it is often easy to see why one particular individual is putting on weight it is often less easy to understand why the average weight of the population of a country should be rising, especially when that rise is both rapid and sustained, as in the case of the United States and the United Kingdom.

There are of course numerous theories being put forward for the increase in the rate of obesity in the US and the UK over the past twenty-five years but, whatever the reason, most observers agree that the following factors all play a part:

Insufficient activity. Both in terms of employment and recreation people are far less active than they once were with far fewer people engaged in manual work and an increasing number of people choosing to pursue relatively sedentary recreational activities. It is also interesting to note that obese people tend to be less active but that this does not stem directly from their obesity. In general weight gain (or loss) does not affect an individual?s level of activity but a change in activity does produce a gain (or loss) in weight.

A reduction in the cost of food. The relative cost of food today is lower in the US and much of Europe than at any time in history and the majority of people in both the US and the UK are able to eat more or less as much food as they want.

The low cost of motoring. Two and even three car families are commonplace today and more and more people are taking to their cars even for the shortest of journeys in preference to using public transport or walking.

Changing work patterns. In addition to the lower activity in many forms of employment as more of us sit behind a desk or at a computer, it is also increasingly common for both partners to work rather than for one partner to look after the home and take care of cooking the meals. This, in turn, results in a rise in the number of people eating out at restaurants or buying take-out meals on the way home.

The rise in the popularity of fast food restaurants. The increasing popularity of fast food restaurants has given rise to intense competition which has, in turn, led to increased portion sizes. A regular order of fries at McDonalds used to be around 200 calories but today is up around 600 calories.

Increased food production. Although perhaps not quite such an obvious cause the fact that US now produces about three times as much food as the country needs also adds to the problem of obesity, principally by further reducing the cost of many staple food items to the food producers.

An ageing population. As we age our metabolism slows and we require fewer calories to meet our daily needs. Eating habits however do not generally recognize this fact and so obesity tends to become an increasing problem with age for an individual. However, where a population as whole is ageing, as is the case in the US and the UK, obesity also increases across that population.

One interesting and apparent anomaly in the environmental factors aiding the growth of obesity would seem to be the craze for dieting and exercise which has swept across both the US and the UK. In fact this is in itself also adding to the problem as studies have clearly shown that the vast majority of diets do not work and invariably people actually gain weight once they come off a diet. Dieting however becomes something of an obsession for many people and they diet almost as frequently as they change their underwear, creating a pattern of falling and rising weight which, over time, results in a gradual rise in weight.

The net result of the rise in obesity on both sides of the pond is a corresponding increase in the number of people abandoning the diet and exercise routine and opting for the gastric bypass as the solution to their problem. While this is not an easy option it is certainly an effective one.

Although gastric bypass surgery is still not commonly performed on adolescents, the growing problem of obesity in teenagers has resulted in a significant rise in the number of teenage weight loss surgeries, with the number performed tripling between 2000 and 2003. But is surgery a suitable option for a teenager?

Although the number of gastric bypass operations being carried out each year is growing as obesity rates continue to rise in many Western countries, weight loss surgery is still not considered by many to be a suitable solution for obesity in teenagers. This may however be changing and, while numbers still remain small, the number of teenage weight loss surgeries tripled between 2000 and 2003.

At present there are two issues as far as many surgeons are concerned when it comes to teenage obesity surgery. The first is whether or not the procedure is safe in adolescents and the second is how adolescent patients will fare in the longer term.

As far as the longer term effects of surgery are concerned this is a question that will only be answered in time and once a large enough group of adolescents have been through surgery and meaningful statistics are to hand. In 2003, for example, more than 105,000 bariatric operations were performed but, of these, less than 800 were performed on adolescents. Even though some consider that this is a meaningful sample size on which to draw conclusions about the longer term effects of surgery, we will nonetheless still have to wait several years before any conclusions can be drawn.

In terms of surgical success adolescents have proved to be excellent candidates for surgery, requiring less time in hospital, recovering faster than adults and experiencing fewer surgical and post-operative complications. This is perhaps not too surprising when you consider that most adolescents enter surgery without the other major medical problems which are often seen in adults. Most importantly the death rate from gastric bypass surgery in teenagers is very much lower than that seen in adults.

In addition to the two concerns related directly to surgery itself there is also the wider question of whether or not we should be following this route at all with teenagers. Weight loss surgery requires patients to make considerable changes to their lifestyle and there are psychological issues to be faced both before and particularly after surgery. It is one thing for adults to tackle these issues, but many people question whether this a burden we should be placing on adolescents.

At this point there seems to be little doubt that gastric bypass surgery is an effective solution to the problem of obesity in teenagers but time will be needed to assess the longer term effects of surgery and to allow for further studies to be carried out into the psychological aspects of surgery.

Mini gastric bypass is a medical word that you have probably heard a lot about and actually describes several related sorts of weight loss operations. There are countless people who have undergone this surgery, as well as many famous persons, are very pleased by this weight loss system.

In spite of that, before you determine it is the appropriate system for you to start losing weight, you must take into consideration the advantageous and the not so beneficial segment of it. Even though mini gastric bypass is a successful way of weight loss, it should be first and foremost applied to deal with people that are judged by doctors to be morbidly obese.

Since there are genuine risks of undergoing this type of surgery, mini gastric bypass is employ only when the risks of surgery are diminished by the risks of wellbeing that the over weight individual is currently facing. In case that you are thinking about this sort of surgery for losing weight, you are going to generally be required to suffer from medical problems that are instigated or made worse by your weight.

For example, it could be problems when diabetes has advanced or blood pressure is raised too much. By losing the weight that your body is forced to carry around, through mini gastric bypass or any other serious weight loss system, you are more capable of turning around or slow down the development of medical problems like these.

What you need to also understand is the fact that mini gastric bypass is more important to protecting your wellbeing then improving the way that you look. Numerous obese people discover that serious weight loss with any method is extraordinarily demanding and provides little immediate satisfaction.

It is very difficult to drop even a few pounds, not to even think about the pounds that most people with obesity problem thinking about gastric bypass need to lose. By way of this way of losing weight, the body really does loses weight fast, simply because you are incapable to swallow as much as you were able to.

In order to provide you such beneficial health effects, mini gastric bypass to all intents and purposes, partitions the stomach in two. By separating the stomach into two parts, the smaller of the two is at the top, the individual will feel fuller faster, and will consume just tiny amounts of food.

This is the product of the stomach, after the operation, being considerably lesser in size. Majority of those that have undergone gastric bypass are going to eat more tiny meals rather then a few larger ones.

Through gastric bypass you are going to actually lose a large amount of superfluous weight. So in conclusion, if you have struggled to lose a lot of weight with other means and was unable to succeed, mini gastric bypass could just be the right thing for you.

So What is gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure aimed at helping people lose weight by making the stomach smaller and bypassing a part of the small intestine. This results in eating less (because you feel full more quickly) and absorbing fewer calories (because the food does not spend as long in the intestine).

Who should consider?

Gastric bypass is a serious surgical procedure designed to help a serious problem. Generally, gastric bypass is not considered unless the patient is more than a hundred pounds overweight, has a body mass index of greater than 40, or has serious health conditions related to obesity.

What are the benefits ?

Gastric bypass usually results in rapid weight loss, with people losing up to a third of their body weight within one to five years.

This can help control other weight-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, etc. Some gastric bypass patients report going from taking a dozen medications or more to taking only one or two.

People have also reported benefiting socially and emotionally from gastric bypass surgery, with the weight loss allowing them to participate in more activities they enjoy.

What are the risks ?

Gastric bypass is major surgery, and anyone who undergoes it runs all the risks normally associated with surgery. These risks may include infection, bleeding, and even death. In addition, people who have undergone gastric bypass may suffer from nutritional deficiencies.

Even after enduring the trauma of gastric bypass, not everyone is able to keep the weight off. If the patient continues to overeat, the stomach will, in time, re-expand.

Getting gastric bypass surgery is not a magic bullet for obesity. Rather, it is the beginning of a new, nutrition-conscious lifestyle that the patient must carefully maintain in order to lose the weight and keep it off.

Losing weight is something that many people have to face at some point in their lives. For many people it is a lifelong struggle that results in them facing the medical problems associated with obesity.

When a person becomes morbidly obese they are actually facing a much shorter life span. The human body is not equipped to carry too much extra weight. With any additional mass, many of the bodys internal organs must work harder.

One solution that many people are now turning to is gastric bypass surgery. This is a medical procedure designed to help people who are obese lose weight so that they can go on to live longer and healthier lives. Gastric bypass is not designed for a person who has just twenty or thirty pounds to lose.

A doctor may suggest gastric bypass if a person has been struggling with an obesity problem for a number of years. There are many conditions which are a direct result of being obese including diabetes and coronary artery disease. For these people they simply need to loose weight in order to prolong their lives.

Before a person can have a gastric bypass procedure they need to undergo a battery of tests. These tests will help determine whether or not their body can survive the surgery. They will also speak with a psychologist who will decide whether they are mentally and emotionally stable enough to face the consequences.

Once the surgery has been performed the real work begins. Gastric bypass involves cutting off access to the stomach. The persons digestive system is revamped so that they now only have a small pouch that is used to store food. This means that they are very restricted in what they are permitted to eat. Because their food intake is so drastically reduced during the gastric bypass operation they can no longer absorb as many calories as they once did.

Many people who undergo a gastric bypass have to completely learn to change their eating habits. This can prove to be a challenge but if they continue to eat the same as before the operation they will suffer very serious complications.

Exercise is important as well after a gastric bypass. If a person is very obese they will have to begin slowly perhaps by walking for just a few moments each day until they begin to lose the weight. Once more weight is lost they can quickly increase their exercise time each day and include activities such as riding a bike and even lifting weights.

It can be very easy to fall back into old patterns once the weight has been lost but it is important to view gastric bypass as a second chance at life. If you are fortunate enough to have the surgery and lose the weight, take great care of yourself so you never have to face those same health problems again.

With the number of people suffering from obesity rising so rapidly in America it was only a matter of time before the miracle cure for those who were morbidly obese. Is it all really as simple as stapling your stomach?

The gastric bypass has suffered both positive and negative press since it’s availability to the general public. We’ve heard the fatal horror stories resulting in death months down the line after the surgery, but we’ve also heard the success stories by hundreds of satisfied and much trimmer people!

The surgery sounds simple, the surgeon will tie off part of your stomach creating a re-route around the rest of the stomach which reduces the amount of food the person can take in, causing them to feel hungry after only a few bites. Its clear why the gastric bypass works and why weight loss is very rapid after the surgery.

While it sounds simple on the surface the gastric bypass is actually a very complex procedure, both for the surgeon and the patient, mentally and physically. The rigid diet a patient must stick to afterwards could be challenging and there are important nutrients to take.

You should always seek professional advice if you’re thinking about having the gastric bypass, and remember there are many other ways of weight loss. Invasive surgery always carries a risk.
